A railway line that has been largely silent for decades is preparing for a new chapter in Berlin.
The Siemensbahn, a historic suburban rail route serving the Siemensstadt area, is moving into a major redevelopment phase involving the rehabilitation of existing infrastructure and the construction of new railway elements.
The project is far more complicated than simply laying new tracks. Plans include the rehabilitation of the existing viaduct, a new bridge over the River Spree, track renewal, work on numerous bridges and the modernisation of three stations.
It is a classic example of the challenge facing today's infrastructure engineers: how do you bring ageing assets into a modern transport network without starting from scratch?

Projects like the Siemensbahn highlight why infrastructure digitisation is becoming increasingly important.
