The Mechanical Design Master Course prepares students for careers in Mechanical Building Services Design through comprehensive training in HVAC, Plumbing, and Fire Protection Design.

Combining engineering fundamentals, industry-standard software, design calculations, and hands-on commercial project experience, the course equips learners with the practical skills required for real-world mechanical design projects.

Course Syllabus

The programme runs 5 days a week, 2 hours a day, and is structured across four training blocks totalling 80–100 hours including project practice.

  • Introduction & Interface — basic concepts, interface & navigation, units, limits, snap and grid setup
  • Basic Drawing Tools — line, circle, arc, rectangle, polygon, ellipse; coordinate input; object selection
  • Modify Tools — move, copy, rotate, mirror, scale, trim, extend, offset, fillet, chamfer
  • Layers & Properties — layer creation and management, line types, colors, thickness
  • Annotations & Dimensions — text, dimensions and styles, leaders, multileaders, hatching
  • Blocks & Layouts — blocks, viewports, model vs paper space, dynamic blocks, title block, shop drawing

  • Module 1 — Introduction to HVAC & Design Fundamentals: types of HVAC systems, comfort air conditioning, IAQ, HVAC design process, building drawings, ASHRAE / SMACNA / DW144 standards
  • Module 2 — Cooling & Heating Load Calculation: heat load analysis, design conditions, U-factor & R-value, solar/lighting/equipment heat gain, sensible & latent heat, manual heat load basics, HAP software
  • Module 3 — Ventilation System Design: fresh air design to ASHRAE 62.1, exhaust system design, smoke management, staircase & lift lobby pressurization
  • Module 4 — HVAC Equipment Selection: refrigeration fundamentals, AHU, FCU, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, split & package AC, VRF/VRV, fans, diffusers, grilles
  • Module 5 — Air Distribution & Chilled Water System Design: duct classification, routing, sizing methods, McQuay DuctSizer, static pressure, air terminals, duct accessories, chilled water systems, pipe sizing, GPM & pump head calculation
  • Module 6 — HVAC Controls & Basic System Coordination: thermostats, sensors, control valves, actuators, VFD, BMS, coordination with architecture, electrical & plumbing
  • Module 7 — Installation, Drawings & Commissioning: HVAC layout drawings, duct & chilled water layouts, sections & details, installation basics, air & water balancing, testing and commissioning

  • Module 1 — Introduction to Plumbing Design: plumbing fundamentals, terminology, types of systems, reading architectural drawings, IPC & local authority requirements
  • Module 2 — Water Supply System Design: cold & hot water supply, direct & indirect systems, water demand calculations, fixture units, water storage (UG & OH tanks), pumps, pipe materials and valves
  • Module 3 — Sanitary Drainage System Design: drainage principles, fixtures, traps, floor drains, cleanouts, single & two stack systems, vent pipe systems, drainage pipe sizing and slope
  • Module 4 — Storm Water Drainage Design: roof drainage, rainwater pipes, gutters, downpipes, rainfall intensity, flow calculation, catch basin, gully trap, manhole, soak pit
  • Module 5 — Plumbing Drawings & Coordination: water supply, drainage and storm water layouts, riser diagrams, schematics, isometric views, coordination with architecture, structure, HVAC & electrical

  • Module 1 — Introduction to Fire Protection: fire triangle & tetrahedron, classes of fire, extinguisher types, active & passive fire protection, NFPA codes, local fire authority requirements
  • Module 2 — Fire Detection & Alarm System: smoke, heat and beam detectors, manual call points, hooters, strobe lights, FACP, detector placement, zoning, basic alarm layout design
  • Module 3 — Fire Fighting Systems: automatic sprinkler systems, sprinkler types and head selection, hose reel, hydrant system, fire pumps, fire water storage tank, landing valves, breeching inlet
  • Module 4 — Fire Suppression Systems: clean agent and CO2 suppression, kitchen hood suppression, foam systems; applications in data centres, electrical rooms, commercial kitchens and industrial areas
  • Module 5 — Fire Protection Drawings: fire alarm, sprinkler, hydrant and hose reel layouts, fire protection symbols and schematics

Final Capstone Project

Students complete a real commercial building MEP design project, delivering:
