Holcim Opens a New Low-Carbon Cement Production Line in Czechia

The push to reduce construction's carbon footprint is moving beyond experimental materials and into industrial production.

Holcim has opened a new calcined-clay production line at its Čížkovice plant in Czechia, expanding its ability to manufacture its lower-carbon ECOPlanet cement range. The new facility is designed to increase the availability of cement with a reduced carbon footprint.

Why Calcined Clay Matters

Cement is one of the most carbon-intensive materials used in construction. Reducing emissions therefore requires changes not only to building design but also to the materials that go into concrete and infrastructure.

Calcined clay can partially replace traditional clinker, helping reduce the emissions associated with cement production.

The new production capacity is significant because scaling lower-carbon materials is one of the major challenges facing the construction industry. Sustainable materials only have a meaningful impact when they can be produced and supplied at industrial scale.
