The planned multipurpose terminal at Tuna Tekra will introduce new cargo-handling capacity and accommodate larger vessels at one of India's major maritime gateways.

Essar Ports Limited has received a Letter of Award from Deendayal Port Authority to develop a ₹2,276.06 crore multipurpose cargo terminal at Tuna Tekra, Kandla, in Gujarat.

The project will be developed through a public-private partnership under a 30-year Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) arrangement.

Four New Berths for Larger Vessels

The proposed terminal is designed to handle 18.33 million tonnes of cargo annually, with four berths measuring 300 metres each.

With a combined berth length of 1,200 metres, the facility will accommodate Cape-size vessels of up to 170,000 deadweight tonnes and provide draft capability of up to 18 metres.

The investment includes more than ₹1,552 crore from Essar Ports and approximately ₹723 crore from Deendayal Port Authority.

The port authority will also provide supporting infrastructure, including access-channel dredging, berth pockets, turning circles and a common approach road.

Expanding Maritime Infrastructure

The development is expected to reduce pressure on existing dry-cargo berths while improving cargo-handling efficiency and supporting larger shipping operations.

For civil and marine engineers, the project brings together berth construction, dredging, navigational requirements and landside infrastructure within a major port expansion.

The Letter of Award advances the project towards development, although construction commencement and completion dates have not been confirmed in the announcement.
