Construction software specialist Trimble / Viewpoint has released an update to its “Field View” offering, introducing a fully embedded 3D model viewer for mobile and field use. The new feature allows on-site users to open, view and interact with federated BIM models (IFC/3D) directly on mobile devices. Tasks, checklists, inspections and snagging items can be pinned into the 3D model and automatically reflected in linked 2D plans.

Key Features:

  • Unified 2D/3D workflows: users can switch seamlessly between model and drawing views.
  • “Pin to model” functionality: tasks and forms tied to exact positions within the 3D model.
  • Automated calibration of BIM files during project setup — drastically reducing setup time from days to hours.

Why It Matters:

Field teams are increasingly expected to work with model data, not just drawings. Providing a 3D viewer in the mobile workflow helps reduce misinterpretation of drawings, improves inspection accuracy, and supports the “golden thread” of information from design to handover.

Implications for AEC/BIM:

By enabling model-based workflows in the field, BIM becomes more than a design tool — it becomes a live source of truth for construction management, quality assurance, and site coordination. Contractors who embed this capability may see fewer errors, more efficient documentation, and smoother handovers.

Conclusion:

The update underlines the push for BIM data to be accessible, actionable and field-friendly. The model is no longer confined to the office—it follows teams out to the construction site.
