Surveying technology rarely makes headlines in the wider AEC industry, but a major change to North America's geospatial foundation could have consequences far beyond the surveying profession.

The United States and Canada are modernising their national spatial reference systems, replacing older coordinate frameworks with new reference systems designed to provide more accurate and stable positioning. Trimble is preparing its surveying and construction software for the transition.

The modernised U.S. system will introduce new terrestrial reference frames, a new vertical datum and updated geoid models. For professionals working with high-accuracy positioning, this is more than a software update—it changes the reference framework used to describe where things actually are.
