Is the BIM model ready to become part of the construction process itself?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

What happens when the BIM model stops being a design reference and becomes the information source people actually build from?<\/strong><\/p>\n

For most construction projects, the final journey still looks familiar:<\/p>\n

    BIM has transformed how buildings are designed and coordinated, but the drawing has remained an important bridge between the digital model and the people building the project.<\/p>\n

    Now that bridge is being questioned.<\/p>\n

    In August 2026, Hong Kong’s Construction Industry Council hosted a webinar on end-to-end model-based, drawing-free construction, reflecting growing interest in moving from document-centred workflows toward model-centred construction.<\/p>\n

    But there is an important distinction.<\/p>\n

    Drawing-free construction does not simply mean putting a BIM model on a tablet and throwing away the drawings.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    It means changing where construction information comes from, how it is approved, how it reaches the site and how people use it.<\/p>\n

    So the real question is:<\/p>\n

    1. Why Drawings Have Been So Difficult to Replace<\/h2>\n

    It is tempting to think of drawings as an outdated part of construction.<\/p>\n

    They are not.<\/p>\n

    Drawings are successful because they are simple.<\/p>\n

    A site engineer can open one quickly. A subcontractor can mark it up. A supervisor can refer to a specific detail without navigating an entire model.<\/p>\n

    There are also established approval, contractual and regulatory processes built around drawings.<\/p>\n

    That means replacing them is not simply a software decision.<\/p>\n

    A model may contain more information than a drawing, but that does not automatically make it easier for everyone to use.<\/p>\n

    The real test is much simpler:<\/p>\n

    Can the person doing the work get the information they need, when they need it?<\/strong><\/p>\n
