You Spent Months Creating the Model. What Happens When the Software Changes?<\/h2>\n

Imagine this.<\/p>\n

An architectural team develops a detailed BIM model.<\/p>\n

The structural consultant uses another platform.<\/p>\n

The MEP team works in a different environment.<\/p>\n

The contractor has its own coordination and construction tools.<\/p>\n

Then someone asks:<\/p>\n

\u201cCan we exchange the model?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Suddenly, a new question appears:<\/p>\n

Will the information actually survive the exchange?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The geometry may transfer.<\/p>\n

But what about the parameters?<\/p>\n

Classifications?<\/p>\n

Relationships?<\/p>\n

Properties?<\/p>\n

Object information?<\/p>\n

This is where BIM interoperability becomes more than a technical issue.<\/p>\n

It becomes a project issue.<\/p>\n

BIM Was Supposed to Connect the Industry<\/h2>\n

The promise of BIM has always been bigger than creating 3D models.<\/p>\n

Different professionals need to work with information created by others:<\/p>\n

  2. Engineers<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Contractors<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Fabricators<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Owners<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    But these teams don't necessarily use the same software.<\/p>\n

    That creates a simple problem:<\/p>\n

    How do you move project information between different systems without losing the information that matters?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    This is one reason OpenBIM and open standards have become an important part of the global BIM conversation.<\/p>\n

    Your BIM Model Is Not the Software<\/h2>\n

    This distinction is easy to miss.<\/p>\n

    Revit, Archicad, Tekla, Civil 3D, Bentley applications and other platforms are tools.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    The BIM model contains project information created and managed using those tools.<\/p>\n

    So there is a difference between:<\/p>\n

    The software used to create information<\/strong><\/p>\n

    and<\/p>\n

    The information itself.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    That distinction becomes particularly important when a project involves multiple platforms.<\/p>\n

    A project shouldn't become unusable simply because one team works in a different software environment.<\/p>\n

    What Is OpenBIM?<\/h2>\n

    OpenBIM is an approach to BIM collaboration based on open standards and interoperability rather than depending entirely on a single software ecosystem.<\/p>\n

    The objective isn't to eliminate commercial BIM software.<\/p>\n

    It is to make collaboration and information exchange more open and reliable across different tools.<\/p>\n

        You will almost certainly encounter IFC if you work with BIM across different platforms.<\/p>\n

        IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) is an open, vendor-neutral data standard developed for sharing BIM information between software applications.<\/p>\n

        In simple terms:<\/p>\n

        IFC helps different BIM platforms exchange building information without requiring everyone to use the same authoring software.<\/strong><\/p>\n

        It can contain information about elements such as:<\/p>\n
